Raman spectroscopy can be used to identify and quantify the various molecules in a sample. The method entails directing a laser onto a sample and sensing the subsequent scattered light. Around 5 to 10 percent of the scattered light is typically shifted away from the laser frequency as a result of interactions between the electromagnetic waves and the vibrational energy of sample molecules. Charting the power of this "shifted" light versus frequency results in a Raman spectrum of the sample, which may be examined in the same way that infrared and other absorption spectrums are to determine a sample’s molecular composition.
